class this week ( insert awesome title here)

1. I learned about the x, y, and z values of polygons and stuff.

2. I'd like to learn how to not make flash crash every freaking thirteen seconds...

3. Seriously, flash really frustrated me, every single time I tried to move my armature, it crashed.

4.I'm happy that I was able to get something done on Friday.

This is a cool video of 24 short animations all done in 24 hours.

response to future of filmmaking article

What I Learned

1. Web series` are the future of televised programs, replacing the good old television.
2. One has more freedom in making internet videos than television.
3. The quality of programming matters more to the audience than what it is shown on.

My Opinions

1. I feel that this may be true, nowadays people have internet on their phones, computers, tablets, and even glasses! Where as their television is sitting in their living room at home.
2. I don't care if people start watching internet videos more, as long as tv keeps existing.

  • Well television be COMPLETELY replaced by the internet one day?

response to FrankenWeenie article

What I learned

1. It's easier for an autistic child to focus on a movie in a theater, due to lack of distractions and low lighting.
2. Autistic children struggle with communication and social interaction.
3. Apparently not all autistics lack imaginary capacity.

My Opinions

1. This is a cute story.
2. My young cousin is autistic and he has trouble with learning and is distracted by everything, so I can relate to this story.

Is this just a rare case? Or do most autistic kids respond this well to movies?

Class this week (aka animated short, long process)

1. I learned how to use the bone tool better! Only one problem, it still hates me with a fiery passion.

2. I'd like to learn to work faster without making the quality of my work suffer.

3. I was frustrated only by the fact that I'm running out of time, with little to show for it.

4. I'm happy with the story of my short, I just want to be able to animate it.

this is a video to help people with the bone tool, God knows I could use more help with it.

10 common elements article response

What I Learned

1. Don't change something so drastically that it no longer makes sense.
2. Have a strong opening with a statement of theme.
3. Show your audience either something about the world that they didn't know, or something that they can use in their lives.

My Opinions

1. The article makes sense, and the tips are accurate.
2. One should find these very helpful when it comes to film making.

Would giving heroes that hard to find second problem really make a movie great?

response to 5 things to learn about editing article

What I Learned

1. One must keep a good attitude, have a  sense of humor, and be sociable with others.
2. At times re-writing and cutting out pieces of the story is best.
3. Do what the director tells you, then you can pitch in your own ideas.

My Opinions

1. These tips make perfect sense, and I'm sure they'll be helpful later on.
2. I feel like re-writing everything would be horrible.

If you are strapped for time is it a better idea to re-write what you already have, or keep it and work with it?

response to animating creatures article

What I learned

1. Familiarizing yourself with animating creatures is a good thing to do, especially since many animated movies have creatures and animals in them.
2. One should have experience using a variety of diverse characters in their projects.
3. Interaction between characters is difficult to perform in cg animation, but it is great to include and makes a production more appealing.

My Opinions

1. I found this article very helpful and I will try to use these tips in the future.
2. I thought the animation of the ogre was pretty cool.

When it comes to getting the weight right, is there flexibility if your creatures are imaginary?

class this week

1. I learned that walk cycles suck. I just hate them with a fiery passion.

2. I'd like to learn to work faster.

3. The animated short, and the walk cycle frustrated me, since I lost my storyboard I started from scratch and I guess I'm just going to combine them. Oh and the bone tool really angered me.

4. I cannot recall anything that really made me happy this week.

This is a youtube video that uses the walk cycle examples we were given in class and shows how to animate them.

response to Disney frozen article

What I learned

1. Frozen is based off of a Scandinavian story, Snow Queen, published in 1845.
2. They had 50 artists working on the ice palace scene, and it took 4,000 computers and 30 hours to render one frame of that scene.
3. The ending was pitched early in 2009.

My opinions

1. I actually did not plan on seeing Frozen because it seemed like just another kid movie, but reading about all the work put into it, makes me kind of want to see it.
2. I'd like to read the Scandinavian story and see what inspired this movie.

Why were there so many failed attempts through the years?

response to natural light article

What I Learned

1. When using natural light from the sun, it's best to have the sun behind the actor.
2. One should always have the correct equipment for the job ( camera, lenses, etc.)
3. Practice makes perfect, so rehearsing repeatedly is key.

this week's class post

  • I learned that applying real physics to animation makes it look more professional.

  • I'd like to learn how to make my seaweed project look better.

  • I  was frustrated with the seaweed thing, I couldn't draw it well and it came out terrible.

  • I was happy with my bouncing balls, I finished those rather quickly too.

Thought this was pretty cool, supposedly done in flash http://m.youtube.com/index?&desktop_uri=%2F#/home

response to gifs of the 19th century article

What I learned

1. Trying to film one of those machines as a gif is difficult, they are all different.
2. The Magic lantern was invented in the 1600's.
3. The phenakistoscope was invented one year before the zoetrope.

My Opinions

1. What these guys are doing with recording these machines and putting them up on the internet is very cool.
2. I wish them good luck in their collection.

How did they find WORKING versions of thethe machines?

This week of Rotoscoping class

  • I learned that rotoscoping is the absolute most tedious thing of all time, but still doable.
  •  I'd like to learn how to trick someone into doing my work for me (Tom Sawyer) and how to rotoscope faster without copying and pasting.
  • Nothing frustrated me, except for Derek... he's a bloody genius. Oh and rotoscoping is tedious, I already said that though.
  • Being done with my filming made me happy, and helping others with theirs.
http://m.youtube.com/index?&desktop_uri=%2F#/watch?v=_4IWxKfkJ9o  this is a link to one of the most comically, corny videos of rotoscoping I've ever seen. And I've seen few. Very few.

response to zombie love article

What I Learned

1. White Zombie was one of the first, if not exactly the first, zombie movies ever made.
2. Dawn of the Dead contains/is one big metaphor of consumerism and how it turns people  into 'zombies'.
3. Technology is another thing that can and does turn people into metaphorical zombie's.

My Opinions

1. Personally, I love zombies. I don't know why. I've dressed like a zombie for Halloween at least twice. They are just cool, especially when you're killing them in video games.
2. I've never thought about the ideas that technology can turn people into zombies but I agree, that someone who's just starting at their phone, completely oblivious to the outside world, is the same as a zombie.

Why do people like to act like zombies? Being a dumb sack of dead flesh isn't very fun.

response to animated female characters article

What I Learned

1. Animating female characters is rather difficult.
2. Animating a female character's face when she is angry can end up making the girl look ugly.
3. You can't please everyone when it comes to animating, if the female character looks too pretty then some will find it sexist, but too ugly and some won't like the character.

My Opinions

1. This is a movie made for kids, we really shouldn't care this much.
2. That being said, I do understand why some think that making the female characters pretty is sexist, but this is what Disney has always done. 'Make the girl beautiful.' It's best to stick with what's easier, and not worry too much about it.

However, shouldn't they have tried a bit harder to make the characters look just a little bit less like the girl from Tangled?

point of view article response

What I learned

1. Point of view has the ability to alter the viewer's thoughts and opinions of a character.
2. A villain or criminal can be pictured as a hero or a misunderstood person who had to make bad choices by showing us his life through his eyes.
3. White was portrayed to be a desperate man who was suffering from cancer, was low on money, and he had a kid with cerebral palsy. The audience immediately pitied him and pardoned all of his crimes.

My opinions
1. I wish I had watched this show
2. I just hearing about this guy's life already pity him proving that the point of view aspect works. I think it is the same technique used in Megamind.

Do some people see past the point of view technique, like automatically disliking White?
What is with this show? It is constantly talked about by everyone.

animated films article response

What I learned

1. Animated movies are still pretty much targeted to kids mainly, even though every now and then an adult wants to go see the new Toy Story movie.
2. Animated films are treated as one single genre of movie, though many of them are different.
3. Rango, arguably, is considered to be a more mature or adult movie.

My opinions

1. I agree that animated movies are more targeted toward children, kids like cartoons and animated movies are big cartoons.
2. I know the article is about animated movies but not all animated things are for kids. They could easily make a movie out of Family Guy and they have made The Simpsons Movie which was targeted to adults considering how kids aren't supposed to see that show, though they do anyway.

How long will it be until more animated movies arrive that are targeted mainly to more mature audiences?

Class this week

  • I learned how to make different tweens and masks.
  • I'd like to learn to use the bone tool better, it hates me.
  • I was frustrated that I forgot to hand in my storyboard again....
  • Finishing the flash exercise packet made me happy
This link is an older video tutorial for adobe flash and shows how to add
laser effects to a weapon from the Halo video game series. It's pretty cool.

Disney and Henson article response

What I Learned

1. I actually did not know who Jim Henson was, and now I know that he is the reason we have The Muppets and Sesame Street.
2. Henson and Walt are pretty similar and brought joy to many people both young and old.
3. Henson's childhood is said to have been impoverished.

My Opinions

1. These two men are/were responsible for great things, whether or not you think kermit and mickey are for little kids.
2. I'm confused as to what it means when it says: " Walt's fairy tales had dark elements; Jim’s were even darker."

What does that sentence mean? Is it talking about the controversial things in disney movies? And are there disturbing things in Jim's works?
ps here is a link to a video of what I mean when I say controversial things in disney movies.
Warning it contains adult stuff.

This week of class

  • I learned that the merge mode in flash can be the worst thing ever, of all time.
  • I want to learn how to draw better....
  • I am frustrated with my storyboard, it's late, it sucks, and I have no good ideas for it.
  • I was happy just working on the exercises for flash. I'd say I was glad we had fire drills, but I think they gave me hearing damage.

This week's link is pretty cool. It is a video of a tutorial of sorts for adobe flash that a guy made to create a mario animation. So, yeah. Check it out   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9r5O6LzCGWk

response to storyboarding tips article

Things I learned
1. Drawing a grid is a good way to show your character's position.
2. Storyboarding is helpful in determining the actions of a scene and checking to see how it would play out.
3. Good use of the background and foreground can create a sense of depth, which is important to make your storyboards appear better.

My opinions
1. These tips are pretty helpful and if one was smart they should/would use them.
2. I appreciate this article for giving us these helpful ideas and 1 terrible pun (paragraph 3,line 2)

How long should an average storyboard be?

Sunday, September 22, 2013

what i learned this week

  • I learned to label my tab dividers in my binder...
  • I still want to learn how to do 3d animation and how to draw better. Oh, and how to fly.
  • I was frustrated that Orian ditched us, and that my 5 new scenes are probably going to be handed in late. Plus I hurried my drawings and did them before my other work thinking that I'd have to hand those in sooner.
  • I was happy with my quizzes, I did well on them.

This is a link to an animated video made by a company called rooster teeth. The series is called Red vs Blue and is made from my favorite game series, Halo. There is strong violence and adult language. If you've played a GTA game than you are mature enough for this.

response to chipoltle scarecrow article

  • I just learned about this scarecrow video now.
  • I learned about the use of narratives, such as the scarecrow or the old spice commercials.
  • Chipoltle's videos have created so much controversy and their back to the start video has been viewed about seven and a half million times!

  1. I really liked that scarecrow video, the part with the cows made me sad.
  2. I think that what chilpotle is doing with this videos is cool.

What immediate trouble can chipoltle run into with these videos? (Other than using a song from Willy Wonka)

response to manipulating emotions with music article

  • I just learned about infrasound, i've never heard of this before.
  • I learned that infrasound is unhearable, if that is a word, and can invoke emotions in people such as fear.
  • Apparently Paranormal Activity used infrasound and it made the audience scared even before any action started.

  1. I'm not much of a fan of horror movies and I think that using some sound technique to scare your audience is a a little cheap...
  2. I don't think music usually effects me too much with movies unless the music is very loud and disturbing.

What was the first horror movie to start using infrasound?

Response to the too many animated films article

    1. I learned that Despicable Me 2made 750 million dollars in ticket sales. That is crazy.
    2. I learned that a new movie is coming out about Legos, so I'm going to see that.
    3. Apparently Iron Giant was a box office clunker....

1.I loved Iron Giant, so I'm a little confused to hear that it wasn't a good movie.
    2. I knew from the start that Turbo wasn't going to be very good, I'm not suprised to hear it wasn't profitable.

Will animated movie production be slowed down, or will they keep pulling new ones out?

Sunday, September 15, 2013

I learned a variety of shortcuts to use on adobe illustrator cmd g groups objects and shift+cmd g un groups.
I'd like to learn how to make 3D objects.
I was frustrated by the thaumatrope. It came out a llittle crooked and every time I tried to erase a drawing it would not disappear completely.
I was happy doing the Illustrator exercises because they were easy and fun.
This is a video of a person drawing one of my favorite youtubers. I thought it was cool.
